WINTER IS HERE

PERFECT, now is the time to get stuck into a high intensity fat burning, toning program. You have 3 months of cooler weather then it is time to reveal the new you. But this will never happen if you skip sessions, and pig out on chocolate in front of the TV every night. So make a commitment to YOU that from today I will be consistent with my training, I will control my food

(and not let it control me),

                                                           I will SUCCEED

TO TRAIN OR NOT TO TRAIN?

Knowing when you are too sick.

Winter has finally arrived & at some stage we are likely to fall prey to the dreaded cold or flu. For many, the first sign of illness is the perfect excuse to skip training, for others its a time of frustration, stewing over missed training days. For those who train through illness it can be a very dangerous time leaving them at greater susceptibility to other conditions. Whatever the scenario, each comes with their associated consequences, so really how do you know when you are too sick to train?

Each year the average Australian will encounter 3 bouts of the common cold. It was once thought this figure differed for those who trained regularly but correct information suggests the physically active have the same susceptibility to illness as do the general public. The immune system response is the same for everyone. If people dont manage themselves well, they train too hard, dont manage their diet & have a lot of stress in their lives both physically & psychologically, their system will become unbalanced.

The main reason people fall over with illness is because the illness overwhelms their systems when they are run down. If people push themselves too far & dont follow necessary steps to allow their bodies to recovery they can, & will, become ill. However, if you are run down & you dont come into contact with coughs, colds & flus you will not get sick.

People should be aware that immediately after a hard training session the immune system is suppressed & hence people are at a greater chance of catching something. If you go out & do a really hard session the immune system takes a few hours to recover. This time period immediately after training is known as the open altered window of immunity & it refers to the recovery of the immune system after exercise. Anyone & everyone who exercises, no matter how hard or what activity, will experience this window. During that time when the immune system is lowered, if you do come into contact with some cold or flu that is when it becomes established.

If you do happen to become ill dont fret, it doesn’t have to mean the end to your training, nor does it mean you deny the fact you are ill & continue to train. You must take a moment to reassess your situation & figure out whether you are truly too sick to train or are just making excuses to roll over in bed & catch a few extra ZZZs.

To determine whether or not you should train we suggest the neck check: If you have mild symptoms above the neck such as a headache, sore throat, a little bit of a runny nose then people will actually feel better by partaking in light exercise. Be sure to take caution when doing so, rather than doing a really hard session, take it easy & be sure to wipe down all equipment when used to avoid spreading of germs. If symptoms are more severe & are below the neck, such as chest congestion, a hacking cough, unusual aching of muscles or fever these symptoms would be a sign you should not train & that your body requires rest to recover. Training will not make you feel any better, in fact it will make you feel worse & your recovery time will be longer.

Best ways to ward off illness, simply wash your hands frequently (and do not put them near or in your mouth) and strengthen your immune system with Glutamine.
